Holidays are better when we spend them together.

Gainesville Opportunity Center celebrated Labor Day with a cookout, hot dogs off the grill, fresh watermelon, arts and crafts, games, and plenty of time to simply enjoy each other’s company.

Being together on holidays is an important part of the Clubhouse Model. For people who may otherwise spend a holiday alone, GOC offers a place to belong, share a meal, build friendships, and be part of a community.

At GOC, recovery is about more than getting through the day. It is about building meaningful relationships, having a place where you are needed and valued, and knowing there is a community where you belong.

Meaningful friendships and a sense of community helps people feel good about themselves. Members not only benefit from our program, they take responsibility to make sure things run smoothly. Daniel helps out with technical duties. He is pulling up a playlist for our musical entertainment. We brought out arts and craft supplies. Colleagues enjoyed arts and crafts together during our Labor Day celebration. Creative activities offer more than fun—they encourage self-expression, build confidence, strengthen friendships, and give everyone another way to connect and belong at GOC. Akeem shows off the Labor Day lunch that GOC Members worked together to prepare and serve. From grilling quarter-pound beef hot dogs to making macaroni and cheese and baked beans, Members took an active role in making the celebration happen. At GOC, Members don’t just receive services—they share responsibility for running the program and creating a community that benefits everyone.
